Support of Academic Competencies
While at West Powellhurst Elementary, I had the opportunity to:
1. Work with students individually to address organizational and study skill challenges. While working with them, I did a combination of two or more of the following:
· Developed a weekly check in to examine homework & reading logs.
· Taught students how to organize their desks and folders.
· Created a goal sheet of long & short-term organizational goals.
· Determined reward that might motivate student to achieve goals.
· Discussed possible hindrances to completing homework at home.
· Contacted parent/guardian to partner with them on system created.
· Discussed & addressed underlying motivation and student concerns
2. Sit with individual students during challenging subjects. I was able to observe where the students struggled and hypothesize about the interventions that might benefit them. In one case, poor eye-sight was determined to be the biggest challenge and ended up being an easy fix!
While at Centennial High School, I had the opportunity to:
1. Work with ten students who were listed as unlikely to graduate due to lack of credits and/ or poor attendance. Each week, I attempted to:
· Meet individually with each student.
· Discuss ongoing personal and academic concerns.
· Check in about class work, assignments, teacher issues, etc.
· Collected information to advocate for students.
· Recommend programs (CAL, ACE, credit recovery, etc).
· Discuss future plans and determine achievable goals.
2. Provide structure to a Career Peer Counseling Program. At the end of the action research project associated with the program, student participants reported an increased appreciation for the relevancy of classes to the future goals, as well as greater motivation to achieve higher test scores and to complete school work.
