Promoting Genuine Inclusion
A flow chart of interventions for IPBIS & a sample of CICO
Both as a Licensed Teacher and as a School Counseling Intern, I was a participant in teams working on 504 and IEP plans for students in need of further accommodations. These experiences have helped me to understand the intricate process and paperwork required, as well as the number of interventions that the team must be willing to try, to best support each individual student's unique needs.
I also participated on the West Powellhurst IPBIS team, which tracks the behaviors of, and interventions for, students who have not yet been identified for 504 or IEP plans. It is meant to be preventative in nature, and supportive to the classroom teachers. To the right is a flow chart of the process for the WPH IPBIS team.
In addition, I have either administered check in check out (CICO) in my own classroom as a Licensed Teacher, or supported the IPBIS program as a School Counseling Intern at West Powellhurst Elementary. When appropriate, I have initiated the CICO program for students struggling with a lack of motivation, tardiness, and/or missing assignments. Check out a sample of a CICO form that I borrowed and modified.
Finally, I taught classroom guidance lessons focusing on accepting our own and others' strengths and weaknesses, as well as an appreciation for diversity.
