Enhancing the School Climate
I believe two of my greatest strengths are focusing on the strengths and potential in others and encouraging others to achieve their personal best. This translates into: passionate advocacy for positive change both individually and systemically, as well as a desire to deliver programs and services that can fill in areas that are lacking. As a school counseling intern at West Powellhurst, I worked at visiting every classroom regularly, learning the names of staff, students and family members, partnering with families, communicating with school staff, and assisting with community partnerships. I further believe that my positive attitude and willingness to connect with student at every opportunity provided a model for students in how they can perceive school.
In addition, my involvement with many community programs and the awards I have received while I was a licensed teacher prove my dedication to promoting the school as a positive community experience. It has always been a passion of mine to provide more than just academics to students. For example, I partnered with the Campfire Organization to provide weekend survival camps to students for several years, many of whom had never left the Phoenix area before. I also had the opportunity to work with Project Exploration to provide a weekend trip to San Diego for our fifth grade Oceanography Club members at Mesquite Elementary. I also encouraged school based mentors from Big Brothers to meet with students in my classrooms, advocated for regular guest speakers from places like Junior Achievement, and actively participated in many committees with fellow teachers (Science Curriculum, Hospitality, Safety).
