Classroom lessons I taught at West Powellhurst included:
Kindergarten: Stop, think, act! (see the stop light above)- Students practiced the skill of stopping to think, mindful breathing, making choices (review of several choices from Kelso's wheel), and
First Grade: Power Person/ Self-esteem Lesson (see second picture above)- Students listened to the story Giraffes Can't Dance, learned what a power person is, and practiced finding the unique strengths in others. Scroll down to see the lesson plan in full!
First Grade: Listening Lessons (see third picture above)- Students discovered that listening involves more than hearing words, but also looking for body language and paying attention to the feelings of others. Scroll down to see this lesson plan, as well!
Third Grade: Roles in Bullying & Relational Aggression- We read the book My Secret Bullyaloud, then reviewed the various roles in bullying portrayed in the book. Students explored the different options available for the bystander to help the victim on a bullying situation.
Fourth Grade: Gun Safety (see final picture above)- I used the gun safety curriculum from the Virginia Department of Education to teach two lessons regarding the reasons trained adults are the only people who use guns, and what a child can do if a gun is discovered.
